Mohammad Sohrabi | Lichenologist
Iran’s caravanserais were more than historic places of rest for travellers and caravans. They formed part of an extensive network of routes, human connections and cultural exchange across a land that linked East and West for centuries. Today, alongside their architectural and cultural value, these buildings invite another perspective: they are habitats for lichens and other organisms adapted to stone surfaces and dry or semi-arid environments.
The Persian Caravanserai was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023. This serial property comprises 54 caravanserais across Iran. It is listed as property 1668 under criteria (ii) and (iii).
Distributed across different Iranian climates, from arid deserts to mountains and relatively more humid areas, these sites offer an unusual opportunity to study the relationship among cultural heritage, historic stone substrates and biodiversity.
The wall of a centuries-old caravanserai is more than an architectural element. To a lichenologist, each stone, brick, area of mortar or plaster, and weathered surface can be a small habitat.
Lichens can persist on many of these surfaces for long periods. Some species grow directly on stone; some favour calcareous substrates, while others occur on siliceous rocks, bricks, mortar or other historic building materials.
Wall orientation, sunlight, shade, moisture, the nature of the material, surface slope, dust, nutrients, elevation and the surrounding climate can all influence which lichens establish on a historic surface.
Even two walls of the same caravanserai may therefore support different lichen communities.
The lichens of a caravanserai should be studied in the context of its surroundings. Natural stones, soil, outcrops and nearby trees may support species that also occur on its walls. Comparing built surfaces with nearby natural substrates can help reveal how building materials, moisture and human activity influence lichen colonisation.
Surveying lichens on these buildings must respect their historic value. Detailed photographs and records of location, substrate and environmental conditions can provide a first step towards documenting species diversity. Any sampling or intervention on the fabric of a monument should take place only with permission and in collaboration with heritage specialists.
The presence of lichens on a surface is not, by itself, proof of damage. Some communities may be associated with changes to the material, while in other circumstances they form part of a stable biological cover. Decisions about cleaning or conservation require a case-by-case assessment of species, substrate condition and evidence of deterioration.
Iranian caravanserais can bring together lichenologists, ecologists, conservators, archaeologists and heritage managers. Careful study can improve our knowledge of biodiversity on historic materials while providing evidence to guide the care of architectural heritage.
